Paradoxical Creatures

Bodies, Paper, Words

ARTIST’S BOOK

The subtle boundary between imagination and sound is like thin tissue paper. It is a constantly oscillating, fragile membrane. Can we hear sound through words and do we hear words while reading? Often these sounds are like elusive feathers, flying away as soon as we try to catch them.

This book oscillates between body, paper and words to create real or imaginary audible worlds. It is a tool to produce sound and acts as a membrane to transport sonic ideas. Forget how to use a book. Experiment. Take your time. Maybe five or ten or thirty-three or one thousand years.

Paradoxical Creatures may be performed, dependent on the performer’s individual interpretation and imagination. It’s a collection of verbal scores in combination with tactile and visual inspirations, allowing the creation of unique pieces. There is no fixed order, however through the design and handling a structure evolves. Performers are free to choose a form. It may be private, collective or choreographed, solo, in large or small groups, combined with additional objects, amplification or sounds. – Rahel Kraft, December 2019
