DREAMING WITH EARS

My Place / My Sound – Dreaming with Ears is dealing with daily, personal, auditive memories. What do you hear when you think of the place where you grew up or live? Which sounds create a feeling of home? These everyday sounds are rarely shared or documented.

Hojo + Kraft conducted projects in Tokyo and the Swiss Alps, two regions that could not be any different. In over forty interviews with local residents, they collected detailed descriptions of personal acoustic memories. Based on this wonderful sound collection they started with an intense time doing field recordings, musical interactions, literary research and improvisation on site. They were particularly interested in hidden, faint and intimate sounds, which are often inaudible in the relationship between people and place.

My Place / My Sound attempts to give insights into diverse, private inner soundscapes. On the one hand, into the densely populated district of Ueno in Tokyo, on the other hand into the natural mountain landscape of the Swiss Alps in the Engadine. The work combines two works. ‘Reborn Homes Through My Voice’ – a sound installation, realised in a century-old atelier house in Tokyo, and ‘INNERN’ a geo-localized audio walk, composed for a hiking path in the Engadine.
