Hojo + Kraft

Sound and Place

Tomoko Hojo (JP) and Rahel Kraft (CH) perform, install and exhibit sonic works. Besides their solo work, they have been active as a collective since 2016, conducting projects and residencies in Japan and Europe, keeping a steady collaboration via remote communication. Their work has been published by LINE Sound Arts Editions LA in (2020 and 2021), Deutschlandfunk Kultur (2021) and was part of Audiosphere at Museo National Centro de Arte Madrid (2020). They created three geo-localised audio walks, utilising an app as an interface to interact between sound, the environment and walking at ZKM Karlsruhe, Art Center Nairs and Nakanojo Biennale. Their compositions are included in radio programs and play lists word wide. In September 2022 Hojo and Kraft are invited to create a solo exhibition at Komaki City Library.

A soundwalk that has taken as its theme wandering off, losing oneself in the moment, that can’t be bad at all. But what a great sound experience it has developed into in the case of the Japanese-Swiss artist collaboration of Tomoko Hojo + Rahel Kraft is something very special indeed.

With clear nods to Luc Ferrari’s work and his adoration of his surroundings, there is a strong sense of place here. By allowing a meditative spirit to take shape there is a journey of sorts, one punctuated by the occasional sounds of truly being alive.
